Good quality hay and barley straw are the main diet for a Donkey. Barley straw can be fed quite freely, but hay should be limited. Donkeys are able to utilise their food very well, thriving on what often seems like very little. Alfa A with a handful of pasture mix during cold months is appreciated. A few other things to bear in mind:
- Donkeys can become very fat. This will cause all sorts of health problems, which in turn can be very costly to you and to your donkey.
- Grazing should be limited especially in the spring and summer when the grass is very rich.
- Fresh water should always be available and when temperatures drop below freezing warm water should be offered. Salt and mineral licks should be put up in the field shelter.
- Pregnant jennys and youngsters will require extra feed. I feed Alfa A for strong bones and light pasture mix as this is fairly low in protein. Nutrition while growing is very important.
- A chopped carrot can be given in a bucket. I never feed by hand as with so many donkeys they can become a little pushy if they think they are getting titbits every time you go into the field.
