Breeding Miniature Donkeys is a considerable investment in money, time and effort. If you are thinking of starting, we have the following advice based on our experience:
- A jenny should not be considered for breeding before the age of three as she would not be physically or mentally mature enough, and would make a very poor mother.
- Jacks start to show an interest in breeding at about 12 months so would need to be kept separate from young jennies.
- Average gestation is 12 months, but anything between 11 to 13 months is normal. Twinning is very rare in Miniature Donkeys and birth weight is normally between 18 - 25 lbs and around 21" - 25" in height. Jennys between 32" - 36" generally have a very easy time foaling.
- Do consider conformation and temperament before breeding. Visit farms and ask advice from other breeders, all will be happy to talk donkey!
